Music A level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
The study of Music as a subject at 16+ has become incredibly diverse in recent years. This reflects the recognition by the examination boards that careers in the music industry are equally diverse and call for many different skills and aptitudes that perhaps did not exist only a few years ago.
The advances in Music Technology, for example, mean that new generations of technologically competent musicians are constantly needed in many branches of the subject.
There will, of course, always be the demand for musicians who choose the more traditional routes of instrument-specific degrees and students who wish to pursue formal instrumental studies, whether in respect of 'classical' music or other branches such as Jazz are equally well catered for with the 'straight' syllabuses.
This course option is the traditional Music A Level syllabus form the OCR board.
This is, in many ways, and extension of the GCSE course with students, once again, being given the opportunity to compose and perform on their chosen instrument and to learn about specific pieces of music from several styles.
Although it is preferable to have taken Music GCSE as preparation, it is not a strict requirement and any student who has instrumental experience and who is prepared to work hard may be considered.
