Biology at Hagley Catholic High School

Course description

This year sees some exciting changes to the current specification content which will encompass a broad range of Biological principles including the Human Body and the key systems within it, plants and their environment and microbes and disease.  There will also be a greater emphasis on practical skills throughout the two years.

Course content

Awarding body: AQA, Specification: B AS 5416 A2 6416. Similar format to GCSE ISAs. Practical skills are continually assessed throughout the course

Entry requirements

Grade C double award (B preferred). Single award does not provide an adequate foundation for A-level but the department will consider individual circumstances if approached. 

Assessment

Lessons are delivered using a variety of teaching strategies which will include individual and group work, class discussion, problem solving, note taking, practical investigations, data analysis and research tasks. At the end of year 12, all students take part in a Biology Fieldtrip to Bishop’s Wood to prepare students for their studies in
year 13. Students also have the opportunity to take part in a range of Masterclasses at Birmingham University which have covered topics including evolution, photosynthesis as well as preparing students for medical school.

Future opportunities

An A-level in Biology opens up a diverse range of degrees at university and offers students the opportunity to specialise in a particular area. There are too many degrees to list here but examples include: Microbiology, Anatomical Science, Zoology, Molecular Biology, Plant Science, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Genetics, Medicine and Veterinary Science.

Further information

In 2013 students went on to take Pharmacy, Medicine, Sports Science, Biochemistry, Radiotherapy, Veterinary Science and Nursing. Combines well with Chemistry, Maths, Geology and PE.
