CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education (EYE) at Calderdale College

Course description

The course is for young people, aged 16 - 18, and those 19 + who would like to work as child carers in public and private nurseries, social services and health authorities. A full range of childcare topics are studied such as first aid, child development and the early years curriculum. Students will spend four days per fortnight on work placements.

Course content

The course will give you the skills, knowledge and understanding to pursue employment as education professionals. A full range of childcare topics are studied over two years such as:


  • Child Health & Development
  • Play & Learning Safety
  • Research Skills
  • Understanding different theory concerning early years
  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

All these will be achieved by a variety of assessment methods, portfolios and assignments with a focus on your experiences in work placement carried over 4 days every other week.

The course carries up to 420 UCAS points.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or grade 4 including English language and Maths.  The course includes placements and all students will need to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. The college will apply and pay for this. Applicants need to supply two satisfactory references.  


The programme is made up of 15 units which are internally marked, work placement where learners are assessed on their practice and 2 externally marked extended essays

Financial information

In most cases students aged 18 and under who wish to enrol on a full time further education course will have their fees waived.  Students who are aged 19 and over and who wish to enrol on a full time course should contact our Student Services Team on 01422-399367 for more information.

Future opportunities

Students go onto careers working with children, in nurseries, crèches, schools, throughout Britain. There is also the opportunity to work in Europe and beyond, in holiday companies and cruise liners. Students can also progress to the Foundation Degree in Early Years which can be studied at Calderdale College. Students can also progress to university or Level 3 Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities.
