Art, Craft & Design AS and A Level at Whitmore High School

Course description

Who is the course for?

Anyone interested in furthering drawing and painting, mixed media, digital art and three-dimensional media from GCSE, through exploring Art from the past and from recent times. Through personal investigation you will develop your enquiry skills and ability to think critically and analytically about Art History. 

Course content

The course is designed to develop students’ analytical, imaginative 2D painting and drawing skills, or 3D sculpture and ceramic skills in Art, Craft and Design. Students may use other media such as video and photography.



You will be assessed each year through one project and exam. The exam and the coursework carry equal weighting

AS Level:

Produce one project - 60% of the mark: one external exam set by the AQA exam board - 40% of the mark.

A level :

Produce one personal project using your own chosen artist and craft – designers along with a written assessment that counts for 60% of the A level: one exam set by the AQA exam board - 40% of the mark. 


Date(s) of Assessment

Coursework: September – January.

Exam preparation: February-April. 

Future opportunities

Many students go on to do a one year Foundation course at Art college. Students then make a selection as to which degree course (BA) they would like to follow. After the degree course you can take up jobs in a wide range of areas, from architecture to computer games designer.
