English Literature AS Level (AQA) at Lightcliffe Academy

Course description

English Literature - AS Overview: During the course students study prose and poetry from a variety of periods, including a recently published novel. These is also an opportunity to study a Shakespeare play and to complete two pieces of coursework. Assessment: Two examinations (35% each) and coursework (30%). Unit 1: Aspects of a Narrative Students study four narrative texts from a selection of poetry and prose, pre and post 1990. Two hours "open book" exam (60% of total AS). Unit 2: Dramatic Genres Study at least two plays in the genre of tragedy, one of which must be Shakespeare. Two pieces of coursework (40% of the total AS).

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in English Literature, which could lead onto higher education in English related studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Literature such as a Teacher, Journalist, Author or Poet. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
