Introduction to Animal Management Level 1 Diploma at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

You will receive instruction, guidance and encouragement to practise and develop the skills necessary to achieve the award. The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

  • Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries
  • Develop performance in land-based industries
  • Assist in maintaining the care and well being of animals
  • Assist with feeding and watering animals
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
  • Assist with handling and restraint of animals
  • Industrial experience in animal care
  • Conservation and countryside

Attendance of 100% is necessary in order to complete the course.

Students may have the opportunity to study for a GCSE to increase their qualifications, or to resit a previous GCSE subject to improve a grade. To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade E and above. Previous work experience with animals and pets would be an advantage. All learners must provide evidence of valid tetanus immunisation.

Assessment

The course is continuously assessed by both practical and written assignments/tests.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

This course is a recognised route onto a full-time Level 2 course, employment or an Apprenticeship via a Training Agency.

Further information

Each course offers appropriate work experience to complement the knowledge and skills you will learn at College. The course includes a number of visits, including Marwell Zoo, Monkey World, the Hawk Conservancy and Birdworld. Students will be required to pay £50 towards the cost of these trips, other trips may be arranged during the course.
