History A level OCR at Wimbledon College

Course description

Students will undertake breadth and depth studies to develop an understanding of a specific time period as well as the key events and turning points in History. Students build an extensive knowledge of the topics studied as well as developing skills such as analysis, evaluation and interpretation.

Entry requirements

For Level 3 courses - five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, with at least 3 B grades entry requirement for each course – this is usually a grade B or better in each subject to be taken at Advanced Level (or BTEC3) or relevant cognate subjects as set out in the published entry requirements (see page 12) for Level 2 courses - five or more GCSEs at A*-D


There are four units in the A Level:

Units 1 and 2 are studied in Year 12 and Units 3 and 4 are studied in Year 13.

Unit 1 – British period study (25%). Examination: 1 hour 30 mins (Early Tudors)

Unit 2 – Non-British period study (15%) Examination: 1 hour (Democracy and Dictatorship in Germany)

Unit 3 – Thematic study on historical interpretations (40%). Examination: 2 hours 30 mins (Civil Rights in the USA)

Unit 4 – Coursework assignment – 4000 word essay (20% - Development of Rights for Women)
