Level 2 First Certificate in Children’s Play, Learning and Development at James Calvert Spence College

Course description

This course is for students who would like to pursue a career working with children. There will be a clear progression to a Level 3 course which will be offered in Sept 2015. Students will also be better placed to find an apprenticeship after completing the Level 2 qualification if they chose not to continue to Level 3.

There are 2 core units that form the fundamental knowledge and understanding of child development and promoting development through play; Patterns of child development-externally tested and promoting children’s development through play-tested coursework. There are also two mandatory units which explore key early years principles and promoting children’s positive behaviour: The principles of early years practice-coursework tested and Promoting children’s positive behaviour-externally tested.

There are a further three specialist units all of which are coursework based to provide a broader understanding of the early years sector. One unit will be specifically chosen to develop employability skills e.g. independent learning, self-management, business awareness and customer awareness skills. The three optional units will be health and safety in early years settings, making healthy food choices for children and introduction to working in the early years sector.
