Course description

Why study Welsh?

Course content

  • discuss a film and drama in an oral examination
  • present two pieces of coursework
  • study poems by twentieth and twenty first century poets
  • study grammar to improve accuracy of language
  • study a novel, compare it with other pieces of literature and discuss these in an oral examination
  • read and study early Welsh legends
  • study the earliest Welsh poetry, from the sixth to the fourteenth century
  • appreciate literature
  • use of language.

Unit 2: Written Non examination assessment

  • Extended writing
  • Research and expressing an opinion

Unit 3: Use of Language and Poetry

  • Grammar and use of language
  • Study 12 poems

Year 13

Unit 4: Novel and Oracy

  • Novel Dan Gadarn Goncrit by Mihangel Morgan

Unit 5: Early Welsh Legends, and Early Welsh Poetry

  • Study of Branwen Ferch Llyr from the Mabinogi
  • Study of 7 poems

Unit 6: Appreciation of Literature and Use of Language in context

  • Appreciate Literature
  • Writing a factual task based on reading stimuli

Assessment

Unit 1:

  • 15% of A Level
  • Oral examination: 45 minutes (March/April)

Unit 2:

  • 10% of A Level
  • Present a portfolio of two tasks

Unit 3:

  • 15% of A Level
  • Written examination: 2 hours

Unit 4:

  • 20% of A Level
  • Oral examination: 45 minutes (March/April)

Unit 5:

  • 20% of A Level
  • Written examination: 2 hours

Unit 6:

  • 20% of A Level
  • Written examination: 2 hours
