BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Music Performance (1 A Level equivalent) at Huddersfield New College
This BTEC is a practical course designed for anyone aspiring to work in the music industry as a performer, with a core focus on developing skills as a soloist and in a band. This is equivalent to one A Level, so you will study it alongside two other subjects.
Over the two year study programme, topics will include:
• Exploration of song writing and the development of popular music styles
• Music performance techniques, including effective instrumental or vocal techniques
• Pop music in practice, which includes a practical assessment where you will learn songs
and recreate these in a range of styles
• Aural perception skills where you will develop the skills needed to analyse a piece of
You will use our state-of-the-art facilities to make music, and therefore it is vital that you have a passion and interest in working as a performer in the music industry and producing your own music. You will develop a range of skills and play in bands.
You will gain experience in setting up equipment for live performances.
During your second year you will develop further skills in contemporary music performance, the selection of these units are based on the skills and interests of your group.
The ability to read music is not a necessity, although in the first year you will learn music theory on a practical level.
Relevant experience will be required.

Assessment is via coursework, performances, and teacher observations.
Please note the awarding body for all BTEC qualifications recently made the decision to extend the current BTEC courses in our offer beyond 2018. This means that for 2018 entry, all Level 3 vocational subjects will continue to be assessed by coursework only, with the exception of Art and Design.
This is ideal for aspiring guitarists, rappers, singers, keyboard players and drummers. Alternatively, it can provide a balance to a wider academic programme.
