A Level: Psychology at JC6: Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour.
Ever wondered why we do the things we do? Why we behave and think in certain ways? What effect this has on our physical and mental state? Psychology aims to explore these questions through many diferent paradigms: biological. social, psychodynamic and cognitive psychology.
The second year of the course tackles thought-provoking topics such as: Aggression - what controls it? Why do some people give in to a 'mob' mentality? Gender - is there such a thing as 'male' and 'female'? Schizophrenia - what causes it? How is it treated?
Psychology will help open your mind and help you question the world as you know it!
Consider Psychology if:
- You enjoy thinking analytically and critically.
- You're keen to learn about new scientific topics and issues.
- You like learning through group work and activities, as well as reading and research.
JC6 general entry requirements, including:
- Grade 5 or above in Maths.
- Grade 5 or above in English, although a higher pass grade is definitely an advantage.
End of year examinations, which assess your ability to describe and evaluate psychological research and theories. In addition the questions will examine your ability to apply this knowledge to scenarios and behaviour.
Psychology works well with other analytical A level subjects, such as Sociology, Biology, English and PE. You'll develop critical thinking skills, theoretical application skills and a broader mind!
It is a valuable qualification for a wide range of careers and university courses, incluing HR and PR, teaching, nursing, business, social care, policing.
