AS/A2 Mathematics at St Thomas More Catholic Academy - Trinity Sixth Form

Course description

Mathematics is a popular subject in the sixth form, where we offer the A-level courses Pure with Mechanics, Pure with Statistics or a combination of Mechanics and Statistics. We also offer Further Maths A-level through our links to Keele University.

You will build upon the skiills covered at GCSE, studying more algebra and trigonometry in the core modules. You will also meet new topics such as differentiation(the study of the rate at which things change)

These core skills will provide the tools for you to tackle the more practical challenges of mechanics and/or statistics. Mechanics is all about forces and movement, calculating velocities and acceleration under a range of conditions. Statistics aims to draw inferences and conclusions from sets of data, statistics is strongly linked to finance and social sciences.

Course content

You will learn through traditional lessons led by highly experienced teachers, homework tasks, independant study guided by your teacher and small tutorial groups.

Entry requirements

Five or more A*-C grade passes in GCSE subjects including English & Maths

GCSE A grade will be required for Maths, Physics & Chemistry. At least a GCSE B grade will be required for Biology & Modern Languages with a B in a Science subject required for Psychology.

Assessment

AS Level Mathematics is assessed by 3 modular examinations, A2 by 6 examinations and and extra 6 modules make up the Further Maths course.  In each case, two out of every three modules are on "Core" maths skills such as algebra and trigonometry whilst the extra one out of three modules can be selected from Statistics or Mechanics.

Future opportunities

An AS or A2 Level qualification in Mathematics is very highly regarded in Further Education and employment as it is known to be one of the more challenging A Level subjects.  Maths leads directly to fields such as Science, Engineering and Data Handling and also facilitates entry to many other unrelated disciplines.
