History AS & A Level at Garibaldi College

Course description

History is the study and recreation of the past using historical sources. It is a subject that depends on controversy, disagreement and differing opinions.

This A-Level course includes the following topics:

  • Unit 1: British Period Study - Tudor Government 1509 - 1558
    This unit covers the reigns of three Tudor monarchs, Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I.
  • Unit 2: European Enquiry - Germany 1919 - 1963
    This unit includes study of Germany during the Nazi period of rile and during the post war period when Germany was divided into East and West Germany.
  • Unit 3: Coursework Personal Study
  • Unit 4: Civil Rights in the USA - 1865 - 1992
    This unit covers the struggle for Civil Rights amongst four groups in American Society, Black Americans, Native Americans, and Women

Entry requirements

Grade B in History at GCSE (or Grade 5 in English Language if not studied at GCSE).


AS Year

  • Unit 1: 25% (exam)
  • Unit 2: 15% (exam)

A2 Year

  • Unit 3: 40% (exam)
  • Unit 4: 20% single 3000-4000 word essay

Future opportunities

However, it is especially valuable for those looking to pursue courses in Law, Criminology, English Literature, Economics, Politics and Philosophy.
