Preparation for the Police Service (Blue Light) at Derby College

Course description

The Preparation for the Police Service study programme is a technical level qualification which provides learners with the underpinning knowledge and skills to undertake a career in the Police Service or other law enforcement agencies. This is a one-year programme designed to support learners applying for the Special Constabulary.

This qualification has been developed in partnership with a number of police forces across the country and is formally recognised by the College of Policing, the association which sets professional practice standards, supports partnership working to facilitate community policing, and leads on ethics and integrity in the Police Service.

Course content

This qualification covers all fundamental elements which prepare learners to pursue a career in the Police Service including:

  • joining the Police Service
  • protection of self and others
  • physical fitness for the Police Service
  • community and neighbourhood policing
  • dealing with police incidents
  • communication in the Police Service  

You will also have tutorials and a work placement as a requisite element of the course.

Entry requirements

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group but would be ideal for learners who turn 18 during the academic year in order to support any application to the Special Constabulary.

You should have good eyesight, a clean criminal record, a healthy lifestyle and be of good character. Academically you will need to have five GCSEs at grades A - C which must include English and Maths.

You will be expected to take part in the safe organisation and delivery of large spectator events and local community events, many of which will take place at weekends throughout the year.


Assessment methods will vary. You are expected to build a portfolio of evidence for each unit. Assessments will include presentations, essays, workbooks, discussions, practical performance, viva, physical testing and externally set exam assessments. You will need to meet deadlines and work on multiple tasks throughout the year.

Learners who complete this qualification will be extremely well placed to pursue a career in the Police Service and other law enforcement agencies or to join the Special Constabulary.
