Philosophy A Level at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School

Course description

Philosophy is a diverse subject where learners will have the chance to debate, and to learn from some of the greatest thinkers of all time. Some of the modules we will study include:

• Philosophy of Religion

• Epistemology (Theory of Knowledge)

• Philosophy of Mind

• Ethics

Course content

In your first year you will cover: Epistemology: Reason and experience (Sense experience, behaviourism, innate knowledge)Philosophy of Religion: The idea of God (The divine attributes, the ontological argument, the origins of ‘God’, the problem of evil) and God and the World (The cosmological argument, religious language, teleological arguments for the existence of God, problem of evil)

In your second year you will cover: Philosophy of mind (Cartesian philosophy, behaviourism, consciousness) Ethics (Utilitarianism, Virtue Ethics, Kantism) The entry requirements are an A in English (although with the new exam style a B would be considered depending on other GCSEs).
