About the syllabus:
AS/A2 Design and Technology encourages students to take a broad view of technology and design, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.
The subject content gives students the opportunity to specialise in Product Design (3-D Design) and is presented in three sections:
A: Materials and Components
B: Design and Market Influences
C: Processes and Manufacture
Students are taught to be aware of the responsibility designers and technologists have to mankind through an understanding of the potentials and hazards inherent in technological advance, change and decision making.
The course reflects the diverse activities of professional designers and covers a wide range of materials. Student designers are also taught to communicate their thinking clearly and to represent their ideas graphically.
Studying A Level Product Design can lead on to a number of exciting careers in Architecture and Construction, Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Engineering and Manufacturing.
AS units in Year 12
Unit 1 PROD1
Materials, Components and Application (Written Paper) 2hrs - 50% of AS Level - 25% of A Level
Unit 2 PROD2 Learning Through Designing and Making (Coursework) Approx 50hrs 50% of AS Level- 25% of A Level
A2 units in Year 13
Unit 3 PROD3 Design and Manufacture (Written Paper) 2hrs - 25% of A Level
Unit 4 PROD4 Design and Making Practice (Coursework) Approx 60hrs - 25% of A Level
A*-B achieved in GCSE Resistant Materials or Graphic Products. Other candidates will be considered on overall performance at GCSE, evidence of ability and interest in the subject.
Entry Criteria for A2 is at least a D at the requisite AS Level
