Art and Design BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma at Woodcote High School

Course description

The Art and Design Level 3 Foundation Diploma offers a fantastic opportunity to explore a range of exciting creative pathways. The first year is structured to allow you to shape an individual route, selecting the assignments that you are most excited by, which might involve studying specialist techniques such as mixed media image creation, textiles, printmaking and fine art. Alongside the practical work, you will also have the chance to develop your research skills together with an understanding of visual language and how it is used to communicate ideas and concepts in art and design.

In the second year you will extend your knowledge of elements of fine art, communication and design. This will prepare you for entry into a diverse range of higher education courses and careers within the creative industries.

Course content

There are 4 mandatory units:
1. Visual Recording and Communication
2. Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design
3. The Creative Process
4. Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design

Optional unit choices:
12. Fine Art Materials, Techniques and Processes
14. Textile Materials, Techniques and Processes

Assessment

You will receive support and feedback on your progress regularly. At the end of both the first and second years, students undertake a personal project, which is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction, and which is the awarding grade for the qualification at the end of the Foundation Diploma Level (in year 2). The Foundation Diploma attracts the same UCAS points.

Future opportunities

Progression to Supports further progression in art and design education, to an Apprenticeship or entry level employment in the creative industries sector.
