Supported Internships - Entry Level at West Herts College
A Supported Internship is specifically aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 who have a statement of special educational needs, a Learning Difficulty Assessment, or an Education Health and Care plan, who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so.
Internships are jobs specially adapted to meet the skills and abilities of someone with a learning difficulty or disability. Interns can fulfil a genuine business need for their employer and offer a rewarding experience for our students too. The Internship is unpaid and lasts for 6 months or up to one academic year (nine months).
Detailed planning and one-to-one mentoring is central to the success of these programmes. Students are supported throughout their Internship and where necessary, hands-on support will be provided by our experienced job coaches.
Internships benefit students by:
Building confidence and motivation
Improving decision making, communication and team working skills
Developing use of initiative
Widening social networks
Developing employability skills in a real work setting
Increasing job opportunities and independence
After the course students will be better placed for work; and may gain employment through their placement or be supported by an employment broker to help find a job.
