Engineering Diploma Level 3 at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required for students seeking a general engineering qualification. The initial course is a 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering, which can be topped up to an Extended Diploma in Mechanical or Electronic Engineering by completing a second year.

Course content

Students will be working in a modern workshop environment and will be learning skills in a range of practical engineering disciplines, such as machining, electrical/electronics and CAD. Theory classes will provide underpinning knowledge in areas such as health and safety, engineering Maths, mechanical principles, materials and drawing. Numeracy, communication and ICT skills will continually be developed.The second year allows students to specialise in either mechanical engineering or electrical/electronic engineering. There is a large project based element during the second year, where students will have the opportunity to specify, design, build and test a project of their choice. Past students have built a remote controlled hovercraft, a quadcoper and an off-road buggy.

Entry requirements

You will be required to attend an interview and undertake a skills test. You will also need to take an initial assessment in Maths and English to ensure learners are capable of progressing on the course. You will require 5 GCSEs at grade 5 (grade C) and above, including Maths and English.

Assessment

Practical experience will be gained in the workshop through practical activities and assessments. The underpinning theory will be delivered in the classroom and IT suites, where study will be interactive and informative.

Future opportunities

Level 3 Engineering, apprenticeship or out into industry.

There are many different specialist roles within the industry. This course provides an excellent foundation upon which to build a successful career within the engineering industry.
