Chemistry A/S at Challenge College

Course description

At AS Level candidates are given a solid grounding in foundation Chemistry. The specification introduces the chemical reactivity of atoms and molecules and provides an understanding of their structures The development and use of periodic table is explained. The introduction of Practical Skills Assignments (PSA) into the specification allows teachers to credit candidates for work done in routine class practicals. Assessment becomes linked to the work of the course, and moves away from formulaic testing.

Course content

The AS specification has 3 units:

Unit 1 Foundation Chemistry
Assessed by 75 minute examination which counts for 33% of AS Level Marks

Unit 2. Chemistry In Action
Assessed by 105 minute examination which counts for 46% of AS Level Marks

Unit 3 Investigative and Practical Skills
Assessed by Internal Assessment which counts for 20% of AS Level Marks

Entry requirements

At least 5A* to C at GCSE including English Language and Maths and Science Double grade BB or above, Triple Science grade B or above in Chemistry, Applied Science Double Award grade A or above or BTEC Level 2 Distinction level.

Assessment

  • 75 minute examination which counts for 33.3% of AS Level Marks

  • Internal Assessment which counts for 20% of AS Level Marks
