Course description

If you are fascinated by the wonderful subject of science and want to discover how the three sciences; biology, chemistry and physics are used in real life organisations and the wider world, then this brand new, modern Applied Science course is just for you.

If you’re looking for an A Level standard science course with points going towards your university application, but prefer to learn practically, this is a great option.

Whatever scientific area you’d like to study, this course offers a wide variety of topics to help you discover what path you’d like to take, so whether it’s cell structures, physiology, radiotherapy, electrical circuits or astronomy, you are sure to find your specialism.

On completion of the course, you will have the opportunity to study at university-level
or work in a scientific-based role such as nursing, veterinary science, chemical engineering and many more.

Assessment for this course is 100% coursework with no exam, so it is especially suited to those who find written examinations particularly stressful.

Course content

During the course you will learn the fundamentals of science but also scientific investigations, scientific practical techniques, medical physics and working in the science industry.

Units focus on practical activities, from which the theory is then drawn. The full 180-credit BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is studied over two years. Nine units (90 credits) are studied within each year. The first year of study completes a 90 credit Diploma. The second year extends and deepens the specialist work-related focus from the first year of study to lead to the Extended Diploma.

The full 180 credit Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels.

You will study in our modern laboratories at ncn Basford Hall, with friendly, knowledgeable and experienced tutors helping you along the way. You’ll also complete a portfolio of work based on continual assessment throughout the year.
