Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Diploma Level 2 at West Suffolk College

Course description

On this course, you will develop the skills required to carry out routine services and repairs of light vehicles including removing and replacing engine parts, auxillary electrical components, and chassis units as well as learning how to conduct pre and post work inspections.


Course content

This VRQ offers an ideal step to the Vocational Competence Qualification (VCQ) for those who are employed, and wish to continue with their studies, as the knowledge at Level 2 meets that of the related VCQ. Achievers of this VRQ can use it as credit against the knowledge required for the corresponding VCQ.

There will be an opportunity to complete a functional skills qualification. Units covered in the qualification:

Generic Health and Safety units

Servicing of light vehicles

Engine construction and use

Electrical foundation

Chassis Technology

Transmission Technology

Mechanical Electrical Trim


There is the requirement for these units to be assessed through the use of phase tests throughout the year.

The assessment of this VRQ is made up of 2 components:

a. IMI Awards set Practical Tasks

b. IMI Awards set Online Testing


Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.


Entry requirements

The Level 2 Diploma requires ideally two Grade C’s but at least one Grade C in any subject and the other a Grade D in English or Maths.

Progressing students will also need to enrol as a new student, they will also be subject to an interview and BSKB diagnostic assessment at enrolment.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course could lead to an Apprenticeship, or entry onto the Level 3 full-time course.

Of the students who completed this course last year 36% entered Further Education, 72% continued with their existing programme of study and 20% secured employment.
