The wider opportunities for students with a language at Advanced Level are immense. Studying languages leads directly into jobs such as translation, interpreting or teaching. It is also an ideal compliment to employment in industry, journalism, media and tourism in our multi-lingual global society. All of these sectors need people who are good at language and communication; skills which are developed and demonstrated by an A Level in languages.
The Russell group of universities stated in August 2014 on their webpage “If the UK is to engage fully with the wider world in business, diplomacy and academia then many more young people need to study languages”. Learning a language opens up opportunities to work abroad, not only in Europe but also further afield. This may be in the form of teaching English abroad, helping relief organisations in developing countries or any job which you could normally do in the UK.
