BTEC Diploma in Applied Science (Forensics) at Ormiston Forge Academy

Course description

This course is suitable for students who are considering a career in Science. This course is equivalent to 1 A-Level, and could be studied alongside other A-Level subjects such as Psychology, Environmental Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Geography or Archaeology.

BTEC Forensic Science is an exciting practical based course that equips students with a range of scientific skills and introduces them to criminal psychology, police and forensic procedures. If you are good at problem solving and carrying out practical work, this course will suit you. If you find that you do better in coursework than exams, you should enjoy the BTEC Applied Science (Forensics) course.

Lessons take place in specialist Science laboratories and you will be taught by a variety of teaching methods. These will include theory lessons, demonstrations and practical tasks, individually and in small groups. There will also be an opportunity to visit laboratories and attend mock crime scenes. You will be shown how to use the College’s VLE (Virtual Learning Environment), to enhance your learning and access course materials from home.

The course forms an excellent base for employment in the Science industry. It is also a good preparation for a career in the public services, such as the police force or fire service. Alongside other A-Levels it provides a route to university and if taken alongside other Science A-Levels it enables entry into Science related degrees and HNC/HND programmes.

This course opens up the opportunity for work including: Crime Scene Investigation, blood spatter technician, DNA analysis, forensic clean up, Laboratory Technician; Forensic Psychologist; Forensic Scientist; Forensic Fire Investigation and Police Force.

Entry requirements

5 A*-C grade passes at GCSE, including Science (Applied) or Double Award or a Merit grade in BTEC First Diploma Science. You should also be able to work independently on assignments and be organised.
