Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 National Diploma at North Liverpool Academy

Course description

This is a great progression from GCSE Health and Social Care or BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care although it is not essential to have studied these before completing this level 3 course. This course is ideal for anyone who has a keen interest in a health or social care related career or who wishes to progress on to higher education.


Course content

Year 12

  • Unit 1 – Human Lifespan Development (This unit is about the human lifespan, the different stages of development and the effects of ageing)
  • Unit 2 – Working in Health and Social Care (This unit examines the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations in the Health and Social Care sector)
  • Unit 6 – Meeting Individual Needs and Support (This unit focuses on the care values and how to meet the individual needs of service users)
  • Unit 12 – Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care (This unit explores the importance of health and safety procedures and responding to emergency situations within Health and Social Care settings)
  • Unit 7 – Work experience in Health and Social Care (This unit involves a practical work placement in a Health and Social Care setting)

Year 13

  • Unit 5 – Enquiries in to Current Research in Health and Social Care (This unit investigates the effect of contemporary research and the effects it has on health care services)
  • Unit 14 – Sociological Perspectives (This unit studies the application of sociological perspectives such as social inequalities and demographic change)
  • Unit 15 – Psychological Perspectives (This unit investigates psychological perspectives, their impact on development and how they can be applied to a range of Health and Social Care settings.
  • Unit 7 – Work experience in Health and Social Care (This unit involves a practical work placement in a Health and Social Care setting)


Entry requirements

In order to obtain a place on this course, you will need to have 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) in any subject. It is not a necessary requirement to have studied Health and Social Care in year 11.

You also need to have a keen interest in working and interacting with people of all ages and have a caring nature.



End of year 12

Unit 1 and 2 are exam modules and are externally assessed by a 1 and a half hour exam. Units 3 and 4 are internally assessed by coursework assignments.

End of year 13

Unit 5 is externally assessed by a controlled assessment task. Units 14 and 15 are internally assessed by course work assignments.

During the course

Unit 7 will include work placements in a Health and Social Care setting which will run over the two year course, there will also be internally assessed coursework assignments to complete.


Future opportunities

This course is for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in the health or social care sector including: nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, teaching, social work, youth work, health promotion, paramedic, psychology and many more. Successful completion of the course will also enable progression on to numerous higher education courses as well as providing a wide range of employability skills.
