Design and Technology: Product Design at Adams' Grammar School

Course description

The course is designed to introduce candidates to a variety of skills including material manipulation, project management, ergonomics, graphics, modelling and CAD.

Course content

Topics include 2D and 3D graphics, design development, ergonomics, CAD, modelling, materials and product testing, using a selection of materials to realise designs and the ability to critically analyse work.  Also a study of materials and manufacturing techniques commonly used in the design industry.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade B or above. At least a grade B in any of the D&T based subjects at GCSE.


The course is equally split between examination and coursework.

Two modules in summer of Lower Sixth year.
- Portfolio of work both graphical and practical worth 50% of the AS qualification
- Exam on materials and manufacturing techniques worth 50% of the AS qualification

Two modules in June of Upper sixth year.
- One major project of the students choice requiring a folder and practical outcome worth 50% of A2
- Exam on exploring issues regarding the design and manufacture of products. Worth 50%of A2

Future opportunities

Progression to a wide range of Higher Education and Degree courses. The study of this subject can open up many opportunities, such as architecture, engineering, metallurgy, industrial design, product design, graphic design, advertising, research and development.  The list is extensive because most jobs require a capability to think creatively and communicate.
