Sociology A level at Wirral Grammar School for Girls

Course description

This two year Advanced Level course will give students a substantial understanding of contemporary British Society, what affects the behaviour of humans and an appreciation of cross-cultural developments. The AQA Syllabus provides a sound understanding of the key aspects of sociological thought and methods, giving the opportunity to develop a range of skills.

Course content

The organisation of the course offers a great deal of flexibility in both its delivery and choice:

The first year of Advanced Subsidiary (AS) is designed to provide an appropriate assessment of knowledge, understanding and skills expected of a candidate who has completed the first half of a full Advanced Level. It is 50% of the total award.

In the second year the student can proceed to the second part of A2 adding greater depth and breadth in coverage of the nature of sociological thought. At this state a more analytical, evaluative and interpretative approach is gained in relation to topic areas such as, Beliefs in Society, Crime and Deviance and Sociological Theory and Methods of Inquiry.

Entry requirements

GCSE grade B or above in English

Both AS and A2 assessments schedules will be based upon the candidates’ own needs.
