Photography A-Level at The Ockendon Academy & Studio School

Course description

This course will run alongside the Art & Design A-Level. 

 

Course content

· Technical skills

· Control of photographic medium

· Realise their creative intentions

The majority of the photography curriculum is practical work, supported by:

· Critical studies

· Appreciation of artists

· Evaluation and discussion

We develop students’ skills through four broad aims:

· Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers

· Investigative, analytical, practical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement

· Understanding of contexts and the relationships between photography, art and design

· Knowledge of photography in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.

 

Entry requirements

GCSE Art or GCSE Photography grade B or above.

Please be aware that the coursework requirements (60%) of the subject require a great deal of independent work outside of the classroom and high level of organisational ability. You will need a digital camera in Year 13 with manual speed and aperture-priority modes.

 

 

 

Assessment

Completion of two coursework units in Year 12 looking at developing skills and knowledge  of photography.

60% coursework unit and 40% examination unit in Year 13.

An 8-10 week project will be set by the examination board that culminates in a timed  15 hour examination.

 

 

 

Future opportunities

Students finishing the A-Level have gone on to study, amongst other things, Photography, Film, Art and Media at degree level, as well as going on to do Foundation Courses in Art.
