IT Level 3 Extended Certificate at WQE College (Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College)

Course description

This is an excellent course for equipping students with valuable skills for employment and further study. It is also suited to students who are drawn towards Computer Science that don’t want to learn how to program and/or don’t meet its entry requirements.
 
You will study the following units:
 
Fundamentals of IT: You will develop an in depth understanding of IT technologies and practices. These will include hardware, networks, software, the ethical use of computers and how businesses use IT.
 
Global Information: You will discover the uses of information in the public domain, globally, in the cloud and across the Internet. Gaining an understanding of legislation and governing information within organisations.
 
Cyber Security: You will find out the range of threats, vulnerabilities and risks that impact on both individuals and organisations.
 
Project Management and Product Development: You will learn about and apply project planning skills and techniques, including key factors that can influence the success or failure of a project. The majority of these will be assessed in your ability to project manage the product development for a client.

Entry requirements

In addtion to the standard College entry requirements this course requires students to have achieved grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

You will take two units in your first year which are assessed through written examination. These are equally weighted. Unit 1 will be taken in January and Unit 2 in May. These will lead to an OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Certificate in IT qualification equivalent to an AS level.
In the second year you will study a further three units all equally weighted. Unit 3 is a written examination that you will sit in June. The other two units are internally assessed (coursework) these focus on the development of a multimedia product which you will project manage. These units are added to your year 1 units to provide an OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in IT equivalent to one full A level.
You can resit a written examination for a unit should you wish to improve your grade. You are only allowed one resit for each exam.
