Art and Design - Level 3 Foundation Diploma (UAL) at Blackpool and The Fylde College

Course description

This intensive, exciting and rewarding one-year programme of full-time study is primarily designed for those students who intend making application to Higher Education (HE) at degree level.

Although recognised as an access route and preparation for HE entry to art and design, the course also functions as a broad educational experience, enabling students to apply and transfer skills to a wider range of related career pathways.

The Diploma in Foundation Studies features three distinct stages leading students towards independent and self-reliant learning. During the exploratory first stage of the course, you will experience both 2D and 3D disciplines and develop skills such as Drawing, Typography, Visual thinking and Analysis, Textiles, and 3D Design. You will also study historical and contemporary artists to inform your own work. You will work in well equipped art, print and textiles studios as well as using the latest industry-standard Apple iMac computers and software. Visits are commonplace during your time on the course including London, Manchester and Liverpool Galleries.

In the second and third stages, you will select a specialist option area of study that will lead to you to a highly sophisticated broad skilled portfolio, supporting applications and interview at degree level. Self-motivation, a strong work ethic and dedication are the key to your success on this programme.

Course content

The course contains a range of specialist options allowing you to choose your own pathway through the course and beyond. These include Drawing, Graphics/Typography, Textiles, and 3D Design.

Units include:

  • Unit 1:Preparation and Progression in Art and Design
  • Unit 2: Media Experimentation in Art and Design
  • Unit 3: Preparation and Progression in Art and Design
  • Unit 4: Information and Interpretation in Art and Design
  • Unit 6: Extended Media Development in Art and Design
  • Unit 8: Personal Experimental Studies in Art and Design
  • Unit 10: Final Major Project in Art and Design

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above  including English Language plus one 'A' level pass or Level 3 Extended Diploma.  An informal discussion is required with portfolio of artwork.


Assessment is based purely on coursework... there is no exam. The course consists of 7 subject units and is designed to allow students a broad experience through assignments and specific projects. In the third stage of the course, students undertake a final major project that is assessed at level 4 (year 1 Degree level). Students will complete an individual independent project that synthesises and develops their practise, exploiting their skills and creative thinking in their chosen pathway.

As part of the personal development aspect students will be expected to complete a Wider Key Skill Level 3 IOLP (Improve Own Learning and Performance) whilst studying on the course.

Future opportunities

The majority of students progress onto BA Honours Degree courses at Blackpool and the Fylde College and other institutions. Degree level study could include: 2D or 3D Visual Communication, Art, Design, Fashion, Photography, Graphics, Illustration, Architecture, Creative Industry Administration, Management or Teaching. Students may also apply for Level 3 Creative Apprenticeships to gain further qualifications in the workplace.
