Art and Design A Level at Lampton Academy

Course description

Art at AS and A2 is an exciting and challenging way to develop an understanding of the visual world. You will be encouraged to make personal and creative responses to set themes and will have the opportunity to use a wide variety of materials. You will develop the skills to interpret and convey your feelings and ideas in a visual way, and learn to understand the way other Artists and craftspeople work. This will give you the knowledge to develop your own ideas, imagination and skills.

Course content

This four-unit specification, two at AS level and two at A2, requires students to develop their ability to show a range of skills. These include:

  • Independence of mind in developing their own ideas
  • An interest and enthusiasm for art and design
  • the experience of working with a range of media, including traditional and new media and technologies
  • An awareness of different roles, functions, audiences and consumers of art and design practice

The AS course is made up of two units:

Unit 1 Coursework – Working to a Theme - 60%

  • Supporting Studies
  • Final Piece

Unit 2 Externally set assignment - 40%

  • Supporting Studies
  • Exam 5 hours

The second half of the A-Level course is made up of a further two units.

 

Unit 3 Personal Investigation - 60%

  • Practical Studies
  • Personal Study

Unit 4 Externally set assignment - 40%

  • Supporting Studies
  • Exam 10 hours

You will keep a work journal and visual notebook for each unit. These will give you the opportunity to document your thoughts and ideas. They will also show how you use research, analyse other artist’s work and experiment with ideas and materials. You will be encouraged to visit galleries, museums, exhibitions and other places of visual interest.

Entry requirements

A* – B in Art and Design GCSE. If students are interested they must show a portfolio of their work to the art department.
