English Language A Level at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College
This specification in English language is designed to encourage students to develop methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use. Throughout the course of study students will be taught to use linguistic methods to analyse and
investigate a variety of textual extracts taken from everyday sources.
This is a two-year course which allows you to develop your understanding and awareness of the English language in much greater detail. You will learn the vocabulary required to analyse language but will also be introduced to a whole new range of topics
in the language diversty part of the course. These include gender, accent and dialect and the language of occupations amongst other things. Later in the course you study childrens language acquisition and the ever-changing status of our language. There is
also the opportunity to develop writing skills with a variety of purposes for both exam and, in the second year, coursework.
Students will be expected to have achieved at least a grade 6 in GCSE English or have demonstrated an apptitude for the subject.
The course combines well with both arts and science subjects. It is seen as an appropriate qualification for admission to a range of subjects in higher education including linquistics, English Literature, humanities and media studies as well as a wide range
of career options.
