Prep 4 Motor Vehicle at Stoke on Trent College

Course description

These courses are for young people who:• Are leaving school with little or no GCSE qualifications• Are not certain of what vocational area to move into• Need a bit more support with English and Maths• Need to develop their confidence and other social skills• Need more 1-2-1 support and steadier progressionThese courses are called Preparation for Vocation (Prep 4) and we offer a range of year-long Prep 4 courses that prepare you for progressing onto a vocational programme. You can choose from a range of vocational areas including catering, health and social care, ICT, motor vehicle, construction, hair and beauty and creative arts. As part of the course you will also work on employability skills, English, Maths and ICT. Courses are available at a range of levels from Entry 2 to Level 2 and once you have been for an informal interview and assessment, we will make sure that you are put on the right course for you. Once you have completed this course, you will be able to progress onto higher level courses or into employment.

Course content

Prep 4 Motor Vehicle is a course that can start you on the path to a vocational programme within the Motor Vehicle and Engineering area. You will be able to study a range of units including identification of internal and external car parts, valeting and washing a car exterior, checking and maintaining fluid levels on a car as well as being able to access all of the latest facilities within the motor vehicle and engineering block at the Burslem campus. Additionally, you will also work to develop your personal and employability skills completing units in teamwork, managing your money and oral presentation skills. Functional Skills of maths, English and ICT are also integral to the course. Enterprise is also a big feature in the course and you will be encouraged to demonstrate the skills you have learnt through fund raising activities.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. An interview is required to make sure this is the right level for you.

Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. For each unit that you work on, you will have to complete an assessment to evidence your learning and understanding. Your tutor will tell you when the assessments will take place. You must successfully pass all of the unit assessments in order to pass the course successfully.

Future opportunities

Support is provided to identify progression pathways that are appropriate to the individual. Progression can be within the Preparation 4 Vocation area to a level 1 or employability course or it can be within the Motor Vehicle area or any of the other vocational areas that are on offer in college.

Further information

All of the Prep 4 courses are smaller sized classes to allow more individual support that nurtures and develops learners and their learning. As the course progresses throughout the year, more independence and autonomy is encouraged.
