Caring for Children Diploma CACHE Level 1 at PETROC

Course description

If you're interested in a rewarding and responsible career caring for children then this is the ideal choice. On this course, you will begin to learn all about children, and about what caring for them means. Having the right qualifications is vital, and this Level 1 programme is the perfect introduction.

We aim to help students who want to work with children create a pathway to do so.

We have a baby training room with facilities to support baby changing, bathing setting up of activities to support different ages of babies and children. 

We work with over 70 different childcare settings in and around North Devon who support us with work experience placements.

We have a specialist team of lecturers and assessors with a wide variety of knowledge and skills that help prepare our students for employment or further education.

Course content

On this study programme, you'll acquire basic knowledge on how children grow and develop. You'll also learn how to prepare a safe environment suitable for children to play in, how to set up and deliver activities that children will enjoy and benefit from, and how to safeguard children from harm. You will also have the chance, if you need it, to continue working towards your maths and English qualifications. You will need these if you want to progress onto Level 2 in preparation for employment in the childcare sector.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English Language. 

At the end of the one-year programme all learners are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at grade 4, or show that they have been working towards improving their English and Maths by achieving an improvement to their previous grade.


There will be a variety of different assessment methods during this course but the majority of it is coursework, with English and maths exams if required. There will be some written elements but also posters, leaflets, practical demonstrations, role plays, verbals and group discussions.

Future opportunities

We have two progression routes in the childcare department. The Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Children's Care, Learning & Development which is a one year course and has work placement attached to it and leads you towards work as an early years practitioner with children aged 0-8 years in nurseries, pre-schools and primary . You can also choose the Level 2 Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools course which will allow you to work as a teaching assistant with children between 4-16.
