Course content

GCSE Drama offers the opportunity to develop practical skills in Drama and enhance your appreciation and understanding of a range of play texts and ways in which playwrights achieve their effects. Students are encouraged to develop an awareness of social, historical and cultural contexts of a range of play texts.
Students are required to visit theatre productions, making notes on the production and then writing critical essays in the examination. Students will also study a scripted play.
During the course students perform in scripted and devised performances, for different audiences. They will then prepare all evaluation of the process for written examination.

Assessment is through:
an externally set and marked written examination
Internally assessed / externally moderated practical work.
The course consists of:
  • 60% practical work (i.e. acting, or acting & design)
  • 40% written examination

Future opportunities

Pupils can progress to A/S and A Level Drama & Theatre Studies, which is offered in Y12 & Y13.

Further information

Pupils are expected and required to see a range of theatre productions about which they write theatre reviews / essays in the written examination.
All pupils perform and are assessed in at least two performances for an audience, (one may be for the moderator.)
