Further Mathematics at Aston Academy

Course description

Students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience. For someone who enjoys maths, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts. The course enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in the university and employment market, and makes the transition to a mathematics-rich university course easier.


Course content

The Further Mathematics course includes the following topics:


· Complex numbers

· Numerical methods

· Series and sequences

· Matrices

· Proof

· Differential equations

· Polar

· Cartesian equations.


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C/5 or above, including English Language and a minimum of a 7 in Mathematics. You must also be taking A Level Mathematics in order to study Further Mathematics.

Future opportunities

Taking Further Mathematics at A Level can lead to  degree courses where there is a high mathematical content such as Mathematics, Science subjects, Engineering and Financial qualifications. Students who take Further Mathematics progress to a range of careers including Actuarial work, Engineering, Statistical work and many forms of Research.
