A Level Further Mathematics at The Grove School

Course description

AS Further Mathematics requires Further Pure Mathematics 1 and a choice of two other
modules chosen from Statistics, Decision Maths and Mechanics modules which follow the
progression of those studied for the main A level.
A Level Further Mathematics requires Further Pure Mathematics 2 and again a further
progression of a choice of Statistics, Numerical Methods and Mechanics modules.
The later Pure Mathematics modules continue the development of algebraic techniques
such as matrices, vectors and complex numbers. The enjoyment of the subject is
heightened at this stage when the relevance of these topics becomes increasingly obvious
as they are applied within the Mechanics and Statistics units.
Mechanics 3 deals largely with circular motion, simple harmonic motion and Hooke’s Law.
A further module examines the field of differential equations and has a coursework
requirement. Decision Maths involves the study of algorithms which can be used to solve
everyday problems such as shortest routes and critical path analysis.
