Outdoor: Activity Leadership Level 2 Apprenticeship at Kendal College

Course description

Apprenticeships allow you to gain qualifications whilst working - you will gain knowledge and experience through working in a centre environment. The Apprenticeship will enable you to prepare, lead and review appropriate outdoor activity sessions in a safe, engaging and inclusive manner and is ideally suited for anyone who works as an activity leader, outdoor instructor, or specific job role such as a climbing wall instructor.

Course content

During your Apprenticeship you will study a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification in Activity Leadership, covering subjects like health and safety, teamwork, and planning, leading and concluding sessions. You can also cover topics like empowering disabled participants, leading adventurous activities, and handling finances.

Your qualification consists of five Mandatory (core) units:

  • Prepare for a session
  • Lead a session
  • Conclude and review a session
  • Contribute to the work of your team
  • Promote safety in the sport and activity environment

and two Optional units, chosen from the following:

  • Administer finance and information
  • Contribute to joint working with other organisations
  • Support the development of the sport or activity
  • Set up, take down and store equipment
  • Maintain sport and recreation equipment and facilities
  • Develop customer relationships
  • Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Support the protection of children from abuse
  • Look after participants who are away from home
  • Enable people with disabilities to take part in activities
  • Contribute to adventurous activities
  • Contribute to participants’ personal and social development
  • Contribute to participants’ exploration and
  • Understanding of the natural environment

In this apprenticeship, you will also develop your knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning outdoor activity leadership through a Technical Certificate such as:

Level 2 Award Employment Awareness in the Outdoors

Your employer may assist you with BCU Level 1 Certificate In Coaching Paddlesport

Based on previous qualifications, apprentices also work towards Functional Skills Maths / English at the appropriate level.

Entry requirements

You should have four GCSEs at A*-D including English, or a Level 1 Diploma at Merit or Distinction.

You should also be working for 30 hours per week at an appropriate level in an appropriate environment (if you are looking for employment see below for information).

Potential apprentices should have a positive, motivating, can do attitude and be willing to work both as part of a team or on their own. They should be motivated to succeed in the sector and be willing to work shifts, sometimes unsociable hours and travel between sites.

Potential apprentices are expected to have the skills to work with and motivate a variety of different clients they will work with.

Apprentices might also need to undergo police checks for example when working with vulnerable adults and children.

You will be assessed in the workplace and cover off-the-job training at the group meetings. You will build a portfolio of evidence gathered from working with real equipment, facilities and customers, as part of your day to day employment.

As part of the apprenticeship framework, reviews are completed every 12 weeks by the assessor where progress is discussed by the apprentice, assessor and employer.

Future opportunities

Completion of the Apprenticeship can lead to the Advanced Apprenticeship. Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship can lead to higher education opportunities.

Recognition of your qualifications by employers can also lead to rapid career development in the workplace.

    • The majority of our courses are based at our main site. The College completed a £12.9 million new build project in 2008, which includes reception, conference and seminar suites, hairdressing salons and 250-seat cafe with external balcony. The site also features the stunning Construction and Heritage Centre, which features cutting edge facilities for carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plumbing and electrical installation.

      In October 2010 the College opened the South Lakeland Design Engineering Centre, which has brought engineering back to Kendal College. The Centre, designed in conjunction with local engineering firms including Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Limited, features state of the art computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, including a 3D printer, which prints out solid models directly from CAD Drawings. The college is currently building a new, purpose-built engineering centre which will open in September 2014 and provide new courses in medical science, engineering and sustainable energy.
