Course description

AS Unit 1 – PHED1

Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

AS Unit 2 – PHED2

Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted role(s)

A2 Unit 3 – PHED3

Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport.

A2 Unit 4 – PHED4

Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation.

Entry requirements

The content of the GCE Physical Education specification is designed to follow on from GCSE Physical Education, enabling a smooth transition from one to the other, although it must be emphasised that a GCSE in Physical Education is not a requirement for students wishing to follow this course. However the candidates must possess a Grade B or higher in Science or Maths if they have not completed a PE course.

  • 2 hour written examination 
  • 84 marks 

AS Unit 2 – PHED2 

  • 40% of AS, 20% of A Level 
  • Internal assessment with external moderation 
  • 100 marks 

A2 Unit 3 – PHED3 

  • 30% of A Level 
  • 2 hour written examination 
  • 84 marks

Unit 4 – PHED4 

  • 20% of A Level • Internal assessment with external moderation 
  • 120 marks

2 hour written exam and internal assessment with external moderation.

Future opportunities

This is a Level 3 course and as such allows students to move onto higher education at university or to enter any vocation related to sport. This includes sports journalism, sport design, physiotherapy, teaching and sports management etc.
