English Literature AS and A Level at Ripley St Thomas CE Academy

Course description

On this course you will discover some of the most remarkable pieces of classic and contemporary literature ever written and learn how these writers carefully control their use of language, form and structure. You will see that literary texts are always open to a range of different interpretations. You will also find out about the importance of the time and place a book is written and read and how literature is often shaped by the writer’s own experience.

Course content

You will begin two courses in September: a one year AS level and a two year A level. The two courses are co-teachable because what you learn in preparation for the AS examinations can also be used in the A level examinations at the end of Year 13.

Year 12
We will prepare you to take the AS qualification in the third term. You will sit two 90 minute examinations which are each worth 50% of the AS grade. There is no coursework element at AS level. If you decide not to continue with the subject in Year 13 you will still have an AS qualification and grade.

Year 13
If you do decide to continue with the subject we will spend the year working on coursework (20%) and preparing you for two exams (150 minutes and 180 minutes), each worth 40% of your A level grade.

Entry requirements

GCSE English Grade B (or) GCSE English Literature Grade B.
