Children's Play, Learning and Development EDEXCEL BTEC National Award Level 3 at Cornwall College

Course description

This course is for motivated, enthusiastic people interested in a career working with children who do not currently have GCSE Maths and English at Grade C.   Successful completion of this course and GCSE Maths and English could allow you to progress onto the National Certificate where you will gain Early Years Educator Status.   This would then be the recommended level of qualification required to undertake such roles as working with children under 8 as a Keyworker or Nursery Assistant in an Early Years Foundation Stage setting or as a Teaching Assistant in a Reception class in Primary schools.   It is also a 'gateway' qualification for many other careers within the Children's Workforce such as Portage Worker, Family Support Worker, SENCO or Children's Holiday Representative.  Those who wish to continue into Higher Education will gain UCAS points for the EYE which will enable them to progress into careers such as Early Years or  Primary Teacher, Social Worker, Speech & Language Therapist or Play Therapist among others.

Course content

Learners will enjoy a variety of teaching approaches and study Core units which include: Child Development, Play and Learning, Health and Safety in Early Years Settings, Safeguarding in Early Years and Observation, Assessment and Planning.

And a choice of one optional unit such as: Meeting Children's Physical Development, Physical Care and Health Needs, Supporting Children's Speech, Communication and Language, Supporting Children's Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Supporting Children's Literacy and Numeracy Development.

The course is assessed through Practical class based activity, written assignments, a child development study, workplace reports and assessments, along with the completion of a professional practice portfolio and one externally assessed project..

In addition to your main qualification you will also be required to undertake GCSE Maths and English and given the opportunity to undertake training in Paediatric First Aid, Food Safety and Forest school practical skills.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the National Award Children's Play Learning and Development you may progress onto the National Certificate course where you will gain Early Years Educator status.  This will then allow you to seek employment as a qualified member of an Early Years team with Early Years Educator status.  This will enable you to work unsupervised or with experience, supervise others whilst working in Early Years settings.  Employment opportuniites could include; Nursery Keyworker, Teaching Assistant, Pre school Supervisor, Family Support worker, SENCO or Nursery Teacher.
