Biology A Level at Grace Academy Darlaston
Biology is a rapidly developing science at the forefront of many important developments in society. It is a fascinating subject, studying all traditional advances in cloning, gene technology, drug testing and forensics.
AS Modules : Year 12
Module 1: Development of practical skills in biology: This unit is practical based. Students will develop their skills of planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation in a range of practicals linked to the theory covered in other units. This is delivered alongside the theory taught over the 2 years period.
Module 2: Foundations in Biology: This unit looks at cell structure; cell division, cell diversity and biological membranes and cellular organisation; Biological molecules; nucleotides and nucleic acids; Enzymes.
Module 3: Exchange & transport: This unit looks at Exchange surfaces, transport in animals and transport in plants.
Module 4: Biodiversity, evolution and disease: This unit looks communicable diseases, disease prevention and the immune system. Biodiversity, classification and evolution.A2 Modules : Year 13
Module 5: Communication, homeostasis and energy: This unit includes communication through nerves and hormones, excretion, photosynthesis and respiration. Plant and animal responses.
Module 6: Genetics, evolution and ecosystems: This unit includes Cellular Control, Meiosis and variation, Biotechnology, Cloning in plants and animals, genomes and gene technologies, Ecosystems, populations and sustainability.
The minimum requirement for A level Biology is a grade BB at GCSE Science/Additional Science and C grades in both English and Maths.
Students will complete 9 assessed practical tasks over the 2 year course. Module 2,3,4,5 and 6 will be assessed through written exams.
Biology is a desirable qualification for a wide range of degree courses. These include Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Horticulture, Ecology and Sports Science. It is also important for paramedical studies such as Nursing, Radiography, Pharmacy, Environmental Health and Medical laboratory work.
