A  BTEC National Level 3 Foundation Diploma that is broadly equivalent to 1.5  A levels studied over 2 years

Course content

The course is meant to be undertaken over a two year period, resulting in a qualification equivalent to 1.5 A Levels.

It consists of a total of 6 units, of which 4 are mandatory with a further 2 optional units.

These units are assessed via external & internal marking & a written exam.

Unit 1: Principles & Applications of Science (Externally assessed written exam)

Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques (Set and marked internally)

Unit 3: Science Investigation skills (Set & marked externally)

Unit 4: Forensic investigation in procedures & practice (Set & marked internally)

Unit 10 (optional): Forensic fire investigation (Set & marked internally

Unit 11 (optional): Forensic traffic collision in investigation (Set & marked internally)

Entry requirements




Students are assessed internally for certain assignments, and are encouraged to work towards deadlines and strict criteria. The externally assessed units include a written exam, undertaken in exam conditions, and a research task set and marked by Pearson. Coursework is continuously monitored by teachers, with feedback and constructive criticism regularly provided to ensure students are always working towards their goal.

Future opportunities

This course is good preparation for students who wish to go on to study at higher education, in the science or forensic sector.  An excellent qualification for those wishing to enter the police force or fire service, or entering employment at a technician level.

Further information

This qualification would suit students who have a broad interest in science and want to work in the science sector or students who wish to back up additional specialist learning with science. This course is particularly suitable for those students who may find the academic rigours of traditional A Levels a challenge.

Due to the on-going nature of the assessment in this course students will need to have excellent attendance to lessons.
