AS and A Level Spanish at Wetherby High School

Course description

The A level Spanish course will build on and develop the linguistic skills gained at GCSE and allow students to be able to use Spanish in a wide variety of contexts. An insight will also be gained in to another culture and students will have the opportunity to reflect on various aspects of contemporary society. The specification has been carefully designed to cover topics which will interest, engage and motivate students.

All four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing will be developed throughout the course as well as knowledge of grammar.

This will be related to a Spanish speaking country. A subject or key questions will be identified and researched

As well as the above the AS content for social issues and trends and artistic culture will also be assessed

Assessment

AS Assessment Overview

Paper 1 – Listening, Reading and Writing – multiple-choice, short answer, translation

·         Written exam - 1 hour 45 minutes

·         90 marks -  45% of AS

Paper 2 – writing – translation & 1 essay on a book or a film

·         Written exam – 1 hour 30 minutes

·         50 marks – 25 % of AS

Paper 3 – Speaking – discussion of 2 sub themes based on a stimulus card

·         Oral exam – 12-14 minutes

 

·         60 marks – 30% of AS

A2 Assessment Overview

Paper 1 – Listening, Reading and Writing – multiple-choice, short answer, translation

·         Written exam - 2 hours 30 minutes

·         100% marks -  50% of A-level

Paper 2 – writing – 1 essay on a set text and a film or 2 essays on set texts

·         Written exam – 2 hours

·         80 marks – 20 % of A-level

Paper 3 – Speaking – discussion of a sub theme based on a stimulus card & discussion based on an individual research project

·         Oral exam – 21-23 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation time)

·         60 marks – 30% of AS
