Hospitality - Introduction to Culinary Skills Level 1 at North Kent College

Course description

The Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to Culinary Skills is suited to learners wanting a practical experience where the development of professional cookery, service skills and knowledge can contribute towards a fulfilling career in the Hospitality Industry. The course is aimed at 16-19 year olds who have just completed studies at school, or are looking to get back into education to study in this expanding and desirable vocational area.


Course content

Skills qualifications are for anyone who works or wants to work as a chef in the catering and hospitality sector. It is ideal for learners coming straight from school who wish to seek a career in this industry. You will also study functional skills in numeracy and literacy, attend tutorials, and have invaluable work experience in our Production Kitchen. The course consists of 35 credits which can be selected from a list of units.

Entry requirements

Applicants are interviewed and selected based on receiving a satisfactory school report or reference. GCSEs at E – G and genuine interest in professional cookery.  . The Culinary Skills qualifications can help you become a chef or progress to a more senior chef's role. You'll gain a high standard of cookery skills and have the option to learn other workplace essentials like health and safety in a kitchen.


This programme will use a variety of assessment methods which will include periodic skills tests, short answer questions, and assignment work. Your assignments are graded pass, merit and distinction, short answer test papers and your practical tests are graded pass/fail.  You will be able to track your performance as you work towards the qualification. There will also be classroom activity, online learning, visits and assignments to supplement learning.

Financial information

As you will be working in a professional kitchen and restaurant environment, you will be required to wear appropriate uniform and use specialist knives and tools. The College has negotiated a competitive price for a uniform and equipment package. This is available directly from the supplier and the current cost is approximately: £150.


The course is free if you are aged 16 – 18 .  If you are older than this please speak to staff that will be able to advise you.  Material fees of £60 are payable for additional trips, food hygiene exam and final practical exams. Further information can be gained from staff.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of the course, and achieving an overall credit, learners can progress on to Culinary Skills Level 2. There are also opportunities to be employed in the industry and continue your studies on an Apprenticeship programme.
