Basketball Centre of Excellence at St Michael's Church of England High School

Course description

The Basketball Centre of Excellence aims at helping basketball players develop their skills and understanding of the game. It will be timetabled during the college day and you will practise every day with a qualified coach as well as entering a league with the college team. It is a great opportunity for athletes to combine their passion for the sport with their studies without compromising on the quality of their education, or their eligibility to go on to study at university.

Course content

You will be coached at a high level and study all aspects of the game: individual offensive and defensive skills, as well as team tactics and plays. You will also benefit from a Strength and Conditioning Programme, working with national league coaches at LJMU to keep you in top physical condition as well as working with a Sports’ Psychologist from LJMU to help with mental preparation. In addition, you will have opportunities to gain additional qualifications, such as, First Aid at Work Qualification (with a specific focus on sports-related injuries) and refereeing, tabling and coaching qualifications.

Entry requirements

General College Entry Criteria.
An interest in playing sport at a high level is essential. Boys will need experience of playing basketball whilst girls require any experience of sport.

Progress will be assessed by your coaches, and you will be given targets for improvement throughout the season. This will work alongside a personalised programme leading to accredited qualifications, such as AS Level Extended Project on a topic in relation to the game, which will allow you to you to gain up to 70 UCAS points as well as First Aid, and refereeing or tabling qualifications.

Future opportunities

This programme is designed to complement your programme of study and help you to acquire the qualities most valued by universities and employers. For a small number of athletes playing at a high level, our partnership with Liverpool John Moores University will open the doors to their Sports Scholarship programme.
