Media Studies AS & A Level at Beauchamps High School
Textual Analysis and Representations in terms of relevant key social, cultural, economic, political and historical contexts. The study of Institutions and Audiences. Creative Practical Production and evaluation for Year 12 coursework.
Critical Perspectives of current Media Industries in the Online Age, engaging with complex media theories including structuralism, post modernism and post colonialism. Creative Practical Production and evaluation for the Year 13 coursework.
Grade B or above in GCSE Media and/or grade 5 GCSE English.
A lively interest in all aspects of Media in the online age as well as contemporary film and television production and representations.
The new specifications for the A Level starting in 2017 have not been released at this time.
However, the key concepts of Media Studies; Media Language, Representation, Audiences and Media Industries will be central to the specifications. This is a projection of how the course might be structured.
The new balance of assessment is expected to be as shown:
Year 12 Focus
- Unit 1 – Foundation Portfolio – 15%
- Unit 2 – Key Media Concepts – Examination Preparation
Year 13 Focus
- Unit 3 – Advanced Portfolio - 15%
- Unit 4 – Critical Perspectives in Media – Examination Preparation
- Terminal Examination 70%
The transferable skills acquired in the A Level are extensive. We use industry standard software and programmes and this can lead to many opportunities. Previous students are currently working the following different roles: Floor Manager in TV production, Travel Editor, Documentary Cameraman, Marketing for a major bank, Training Co-ordinator in personnel, Events Co-ordinator for a leading University.
Other opportunities include: Editing – Online, print, film and television. Journalism – broadcasting, print online. Advertising and PR. Media Technical Production – Radio, Television, Film. Media Degree or Teaching.
