Physics A Level at Kesteven and Sleaford High School Selective Academy

Course description

This is an exciting up to date course offering a mixture of traditional and “cutting edge” Physics. The course is
designed to provide a balanced and coherent study of Physics in which students are given the opportunity to
explore certain areas of the subject in depth.
Throughout the course, students broaden and consolidate their knowledge and understanding through
experimental and investigative work.
AS Content
Unit 1: Physics on the go (Mechanics and Materials)
This unit involves the study of mechanics and materials with applications in sport, transport, spare part
surgery, chocolate making and flying. (40% of the AS marks)
Unit 2: Physics at work (Waves, DC Electricity and The Nature of Light)
This unit involves the study of waves, electricity and light with applications in music, medical physics and
space technology. (40% of the AS marks)
Unit 3: Exploring Physics (Coursework)
This experimental unit involves internet research and provides an opportunity to demonstrate practical skills
that have been developed in units 1 and 2 (20% of the AS marks)
A2 Content
Unit 4: Physics on the move (Further Mechanics, Electric and Magnetic Fields and Particles
This unit involves the study of further mechanics, electric and magnetic fields and particle physics. There are
applications in communications, transport and space technology. (40% of the A2 marks)
Unit 5: Physics from Creation to Collapse (Thermal/ Nuclear Physics, Oscillations, Astrophysics &
Cosmology)
This unit involves the study of thermal energy, nuclear decay, vibrations, astrophysics and cosmology. There
are applications in building design for earthquake zones, medical physics, space technology and the origins of
the Universe. (40% of the A2 marks)
Unit 6: Experimental Physics (Coursework)
This experiment based unit is based on concepts covered by units 4 and 5 and provides an opportunity to
demonstrate practical skills developed in units 1-5. (20% of the A2 marks)

Entry requirements

Students should meet the general entry requirements to the Sixth form and in addition have GCSE Physics and Mathematics at Grade B minimum.
