Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles Level 3 Diploma at Warwickshire College Group

Course description

Practical training on all aspects of motor vehicle engineering including: engine technology, transmission systems, fuel and exhaust systems including fuel injection technology, steering and suspension, electronic ignition and engine management systems, vehicle performance testing, fault diagnosis and diesel fuel systems.

The course is a mixture of practical and theory work in the College's modern, well equipped workshops and advanced automotive diagnostic centre. Theory work is structured to complement the practical work.

Course content

  • Diagnostic principles behind fault finding on engine systems, chassis systems, auxiliary electrical systems and transmission systems of modern vehicles
  • Practical experience and assessment in diagnosing on the above systems
  • Customer Service unit to increase knowledge of the motor vehicle trade

Entry requirements

You will need to have a recognised current full Level 2 Motor Vehicle Maintenance Certificate/Diploma or equivalent, or proven trade experience with evidence of training.

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.


Continual assessment throughout the course/ written assignments/ online tests/ practical assessments are undertaken.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the Level 3 qualification you can progress through to Higher Education. Alternatively you can find employment in the Motor Industry and use the qualification as a Technical Certificate for the Advanced Apprenticeship. Level 3 is a valuable qualification for those wishing to progress into a management role in the future.
