Geography at Hele's School

Course description

The AS course covers a mix of physical and human geography themes and the interactions between them. Rivers, floods and management and coastal environments make up the physical component and population change and health issues make up the human component. Geographical skills are developed through the teaching of the above topics and are examined in a separate exam.

At A2 students study a variety of contemporary geographical issues including plate tectonics and associated hazards, ecosystems, examples of conflict at the local to international scale and challenges such as multiculturalism in the UK and global poverty.

Fieldwork is an integral feature of the AS and A2 course with local off site visits in both years to study coastal processes and sand dune ecosystems. At A2 students carry out their own fieldwork investigation which is then assessed through an exam at the end of the course. Currently, we are investigating the possibility of a residential field visit to further enhance provision.
